Condition Humain by Magritte

Harrison Cooke

Man, in his infinite greed,

Is always changing what he sees,

To make it fit what he desires,

Twisting nature and stirring fire.

Man covers up what he doesn’t like,

Hiding the truth, smothering the light,

Replacing it with what he needs,

His own interpretation of what he sees.

Man destroys what he can’t own,

With steel and brick and mortar and stone,

Polluting nature with urban life,

Burning green, and causing strife.

Men don’t want to see the sad,

The tortured, the hungry, the dangerous, the mad,

Men pretend like they don’t see,

The urgent problems, the dire needs.

Men have a need to ignore the truth,

To recognize our troubles, our people, our youth,

If we are ignorant, then we will bleed,

Because of man, and his infinite greed.
